I need to get into shape and square myself away, what should I do?

i am ft tall and over 250 lbs, i feel it is time to do something with my life. i am about to start college which i believe will help me out alot but i want to do something else with that. i think it is time for me to start working out and make something of my self. i am an awkward person;kind of clumsy,not very fast,out of shape,really lazy and weak. i was thinking of a weight training program combined with something like boxing or martial arts. but i am not sure what to do, i know that there are so many martial arts styles to choose from. i live in a small town and there are only three martial arts studios around here;karate style,kung fu style and tae kwon do style,which one should i do? i want to totally master myself and really learn something about life.i have also thought about adding some religion or spirituality to my life,what should i do, there are so many religions out there and none of them agree with each other, but i think that it will help me out alot or maybe some meditation training to help me out, i have alot of anxiety and stress, i am also bipolar with ADHD and depression/anti social. if anyone has any helpful advice on what i should do to improve my situation please feel free to post your responses. i am 27 and i still live with my parents. i see a psychiatrist like every six seeks and i have a counselor and a case manager that visit my house weekly. i draw 900 dollars a month in disability but i am about to try to start working again. i am not sure what kind of job that i should get though. i dont do that well around new people.i can make so much without it interfering with my disability check so i think that i need to start work again. i think that i have suffered long enough and that it is time that i did something with my life. i am sorry that this turned out so long, i didnt plan on making it that way on purpose it just kind of happened. thank you, please help if you can. :)

It depends on what kind of dojo you train in and its instructor(s), and how much effort and time you put into training. If you train in a dojo with a major emphasis on competition and your goal is tournament trophies, then you will be in trouble in a real world self defense scenario. So, if self defense is your goal and you're interested in karate, look for a legit traditional karate dojo with a good instructor.

Would boxing complement Shotokan karate?

Moonlighting in another style would be very good for you. It seems like your school is very traditional and almost reminds me of an Aikido school in the way of, "less sparring, more technique". Personally I think that's a bad way to train because it makes you get the wrong feel about fighting. If you're doing it for a hobby then its no big deal, but if you want to compete than its a good idea to look up something else. I've studied Shotokan Karate a bit, just to learn about it, and I've found its a decent style. It still has the "old school" mentality you find in some styles but its overall not bad. Though if you're going through lax training, maybe you should look for another school that has a similar style that you can get more sparring and competitive training in. After all, you can practice a technique 100 times, but if you're not used to doing it against someone who's trying to hurt you in the process, you're not gonna be ready when the time comes to use it. Try looking for something like Taekwondo, Tang Soo Do, Kickboxing, or even just a different Karate school. This way your training wont go to waste and you'll be able to transition well.

What would you tell a loved one to train in for self defence; Shotokan Karate or Wing Chun?

If you Absolutely had to choose between the two I would lean more towards Shotokan Karate. They tend to have more real life applicable techniques and not fancy theoretical movies. The blocking system is very sound and the strikes powerful as opposed to wing chun which relys on multiple "weaker" punches/kicks to overwhelm opponents. If there were other options available though I would explore those. Gracie Jujitsu is very powerful and techniques can be learned in one day that can be immediately used in real life. Also the sparring which is called "rolling" is pretty safe and technique can be applied at close to full power and you know if you are doing it properly because if not it will not work. Some martial arts tend to give people a false sense of security when they haven't even ever really been tested.

How to get faster, stronger, increase endurance?

First do lighter weight and a lot of reps to lose fat. After noticeable weight you should be faster, then try heavier weight and not as many reps. And for endurance try running or swimming as hard as you can until failure. Try shadowboxing for speed in dodging punches or kicks. Don't always hit as hard as you can as fast as you can try to moderate how much force you use. Try aikido it's purely defensive but, you can alter a few of the procedures for a strong offense. You should absolutely still train Boxing. I believe in complimentary training. That meaning training in different styles and techniques that cover the weaknesses of others. What you've got going on is a good example of that. Your Karate gives you a foundation in kicking, and punching techniques (Im only guessing as much because I dont know exactly what style of Karate you do). Boxing gives perfection in punching techniques as well as better movement, stances and blocking. Its true its gonna mess up your karate technique, but its going to improve your fighting technique. Now you have the movement, blocking and effective stance of boxing as well as the kicking ability of Karate. Really what you've got going on is the foundation for Mixed Martial Arts. You should keep training and maybe even think about transitioning into kickboxing, as well as start working with grappling techniques. You';re on the way to becoming a well rounded "Mixed" Martial Artist

Karate is a very strong rooted martial art. good for the mind as well as body. I trained karate for 7 years and towards the end cross trained with taekwondo. Karate was very old style very full on as taekwondo was very modern style olympic point system type. I have recently tried kung fu wing chun and love it. It was designed as a martial art to bet all others more of a system. Very hard to adapt at first but once you have the foot work down it is very cool. Before you try karate try kung fu!

What is faster to learn and to be effective for self defence; Shotokan Karate or Wing Chun?

Hi Its a little like what came first the chicken or the egg? Shotokan Karate has it's roots in Wing Chun as has indeed many other "hard"styles. My Japanese Master used to say" if you want to be stong for one day, buy a black belt, if you want to be strong for one month train Kumite(free Fighting), but if you want to be strong forever train "Kata" (A series or patterns of movements taught in Martial Art), so my frind it really comes down to you, Strong "one day" look up a striking technique on the net and train it 24 hours per day for a week and it would save you in a fight, the problem comes if your first technique gets blocked "what then?" Ha Ha. Go on! Have a go learning it somewhere and enjoy the many friends you will have as well, ok. Take care bro

Tae Kwon Do or Karate?

If you are thinking about doing a martial art for self defnse, dont do Tae Kwon Do or Karate. They are really more self-esteem builders than anything else. If you really want to learn to defend yourself and do some actually intense physical activity, try boxing (or kickboxing), muay thai, or brazilian jiu jitsu. Judo is also good. If you REALLY want to learn how to defend yourself I'd recommend brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ). Its a lot ground fighting and submissions that would be really helpful to you because 1) a lot of real fights go to the ground 2) They let a weaker person defeat someone larger 3) you dont have to rely on strength as much as skill. In a real situation a girl like you w not a lot of strength isnt going to be able to fend off anyone with strikes: theyll just walk through your punches and grab you or something. So from a self defense perspective Id say do BJJ. Its been called the most effective self defense form by many, its physically intense (help you get in shape), and its fun. Also if you question its effictiveness just go watch a UFC fight. Pretty much all MMA fighters train in BJJ. If this isnt what youre actually looking for though and you just want a martial art for fun like taekwondo or karate, Id say do karate. Its at least better than taekwondo, where every 5 year old has a blackbelt.

I can understand why your having trouble with the decision, because of Youkilis' eligibility at 3B, but he's missed time to injuries 2 years in a row now. Gonzalez is younger and that's always a key component when considering who to keep in a keeper league. I would keep Gonzalez but either of them is a pretty good keeper.

I've also become mediocre ranked in okinawan karate and ninjitsu. I've had to change styles many times due to moving around the country, and would like to learn Kung Fu, without being tied down to a dojo. Do you think this would be possible? I do karate and it is really fun :)... well I love do martial arts overall. I did mixed martial arts, plus I do boxing aswell :S... but martial arts takes days to understand basic moves and get used to then... But it takes years becoming a black belt. there are tournaments, every style of karate have different rules like kyukashin (can't spell it) that is full contact karate... and then u will hav other styles with different rules lol. my classes cost �5 on Tuesday and �2.50 on thursday lol... but in conclusion, don't go using the moves u learn on people (well practise) but not proper hard... there r deadly moves in karate lol... and don't go bragging at school u r doing karate, cause that could cause fights... Keep it to ur self ok :) it's like a secret :3

Training and self-control?

My friend is a karate-ka and his school trains full contact with no gear. There is this individual that is a fellow student that, according to him, lacks self-control with his techniques. On numerous occasions he has hit my friend in the face and though many times it's been an accident, my friend fears that his lack of self-control could potentially hurt the younger students as sometimes the instructors will spar with them. By young I mean individuals from the ages of 12 to 16. Now, recently, this guy broke my friend's nose. The reason why I tell you this is because I asked him if this could go against the guy when he goes to test for his second degree black belt. He said it might not because his kyoshi teaches things for real life situations. I feel that, as a martial artist, there is more to martial arts than just being able to hurt people. My question: Should this guy be allowed to test for his second degree?
